Gahanna teachers settle strike

GAHANNA – Teachers in the Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools went back to the classroom Monday morning after they approved an agreement with the district, ending their union’s four-day work stoppage over the district’s plan for hybrid learning.

The agreement was announced Saturday and members of the Gahanna-Jefferson Education Association ratified it Sunday.

“We cannot wait to see our kids on Monday and we are excited to do what we do best – educate our students. We are also extremely appreciative of the community’s support, and we look forward to providing a safe, equitable, and successful return to learning for our Gahanna family, “ association president Jenny Palguta said in a joint statement issued by the district and the union.

“We have excellent teachers, dedicated administrators and rich support from our broader school community. We are resilient, and while there are differences among us, we agree that we must provide a high quality and equitable education for all of our students,’ Board of Education president Beryl Brown Piccolantonio said.

The teachers walked off the job over disagreements about how to incorporate distance learning and classroom instruction in a return to school amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
