Gas prices in retreat

COLUMBUS – A week after suffering one of the nation’s sharpest increases, the price of gasoline in Ohio backed off as the work week began.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas Monday morning was $2.15, 9 cents cheaper than on July 10, after the price jumped 15 cents from the week before, according to a daily survey by the auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and WEX, Inc.

Motorists in central Ohio are enjoying a 16-cent drop in the price, which is averaging $2.12 a gallon across the area.

Along with Indiana, Michigan and Kentucky, Ohio saw double-digit increases in gas prices after the 4th of July as stockpiles fell in the region, indicating an increase in demand.

The nationwide average price Monday morning was $2.25.*
