Girl dies after being struck by dad’s pickup

COLUMBUS – An eight-year-old girl died early Wednesday morning when she was struck by her father’s pickup after he dropped her off at her Northeast Side school bus stop, Columbus police said.

Evelyn Hernandez had gotten out of her father’s GMC pickup on Tamarack Boulevard just south of Sharbot Drive at about 7:30 a.m. and was making her way to the curb when she became involved in a collision with the pickup truck and trailer driven by her father, Jose Hernandez, as he was driving away, Sgt. Brooke Wilson of the Accident Investigation Unit said.

Wilson told The Columbus Dispatch the girl apparently tried to cross the street behind the truck and was struck by the trailer.

Hernandez, 33, stopped immediately, Wilson said.

Columbus fire paramedics started toward the hospital with the girl but she died en route, Wilson said.

The accident remains under investigation.
