COLUMBUS (AP) — John Glenn will lie in state in Ohio’s capitol building before a celebration of his life of military and government service and history-making voyages into space.
The public viewing at the Ohio Statehouse and a memorial service at Ohio State University are planned for late next week before burial in Arlington National Cemetery.
President Barack Obama has ordered that U.S. flags on all public buildings and military posts be flown at half-staff as a “mark of respect for the memory” of the retired astronaut ans U.S. Senator.
Governor John Kasich on Friday also ordered flags at public buildings and grounds in Ohio be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of Glenn’s burial.
Glenn was elevated to hero status in 1962 when he became the first American to orbit the earth.
He died Thursday at the age of 95 at OSU James Cancer Center surrounded by family.
