Graeter’s,OSU celebrate shared sesquicentennial

COLUMBUS – An Ohio ice cream maker is celebrating the birthday it shares with another state institution.

Cincinnati-based Graeter’s Ice Cream is 150 years old next year, as is The Ohio State University, so the company is taking advantage of the coincidence by adorning its pint ice cream packages with Ohio State’s iconic “Block O.”

Newly-designed scarlet-and-gray packages of the company’s Buckeye Blitz flavor, a peanut-butter-and-chocolate combination that imitates the popular candy treat, will be available online, and in 5-ounce sizes at select OSU athletic events and campus-area stores.

“We’ve had this Buckeye Blitz flavor for a fairly long time and so we’ve always been in a relationship with The Ohio State University on that flavor and on that ‘Buckeye Blitz’ name, and so it just made sense that – as we redo our packaging for our 2020 celebration — that we get together with Ohio State and say ‘Hey, let’s commemorate the joint occasion,” Graeter’s vice president of marketing Tim Philpott said.

Philpott says the pint packages will find their way to shelves at grocery stores and shops in the next month and the Block O will adorn containers of all Graeter’s flavors by early 2020.
