Group begins work on abortion rights ballot measure

COLUMBUS – A coalition of abortion-rights advocacy groups announced Monday that its members are working to put a constitutional amendment guaranteeing abortion rights on the ballot in Ohio as early as next year.

The coalition, called Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom, includes the ACLU of Ohio, Abortion Fund Ohio, New Voices for Reproductive Justice, Ohio Women’s Alliance, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, Preterm-Cleveland and Pro-Choice Ohio.

The group announced formation of a ballot exploration committee to draft a ballot measure to go before voters that would make the right to abortion part of the Ohio constitution.

Ohio Right to Life officials say they will oppose any measure that would lead to what it calls “abortion on demand.”

Efforts to enshrine the right to abortion in federal law or state constitutions have been stepped up since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade ruling this year.
