COLUMBUS, Ohio – A soldier from Grove City who was killed in Afghanistan last week will be laid to rest today.
An “honorable transfer ceremony” for the remains of Spc. Joseph Riley is scheduled for 9:30 Wednesday morning at Rickenbacker International Airport, according to Ohio National Guard spokesman Staff Sgt. Nicholas Pavlik.
Reportedly, burial services will take place in Grove City. CORRECTION: Funeral services will be Friday and Saturday.
Riley, a decorated paratrooper, was one of two American soldiers killed by a suicide bomber on Nov. 24 in Kabul. Six civilians also were killed.
Riley, 27, was assigned to 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Riley’s family has said in a statement that he “loved the Army and felt strongly that freedom is worth the fight.”
