Gunfire in Columbus kills 3, including boy, 15

COLUMBUS — Columbus police say three people, including a 15-year-old boy were killed and five others, including two more teenagers, were injured in a rash of shooting incidents over the weekend

Officers called to a home in the 2200 block of Gerbert Road in South Linden home just after 9:00 p.m. Saturday found 15-year-old Marcus Peters, who died at the scene, Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.

Police said the same residence was the target of a drive-by shooting on July 5.

While detectives were at scene investigating the homicide, Marable says a crowd gathered and several large fights broke out, which continued to escalate throughout the evening until several individuals in the crowd fired shots. Marable says the shots did not result in any known injuries.

Gunfire also killed a 23-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man in separate cases.

Darlene Smith and two other people were shot near the intersection of School Street and Spruce Street in the Arena District just before 2:25 a.m. Saturday and Smith was pronounced dead at 9:28 a.m.

One of the victims told police two men were fighting near the intersection and one of the men pulled a gun and started shooting.

The third victim arrived at Grant Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his right hand but was unable to provide any additional information.

UPDATE 7/20//20 7:19 a.m.: Bryan Lazo, 16 was arrested on a murder charge in connection with a fatal shooting on the Southwest Side. A second suspect, 18-year-old Kevin Real (right), has been charged with murder a nd remains at large. Police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.

At approximately 11:23 p.m. officers dispatched to the rear of 1147 McCarley Drive East on the Southwest Side on a report of someone shot in the parking lot found Robert Bedard, 25, suffering from several gunshot wounds to the upper body, Jones. The victim was transported to Grant Medical Center in critical condition and died at 1:23 a.m., Sgt. Doug Jones said.

This was the 67th homicide of the year in Columbus.

A 15-year-old girl walked into the emergency room at Mt. Carmel Franklinton Hospital at approximately 2:45 p.m. Saturday with a gunshot wound to her upper arm. She told police she was crossing W. Broad Street near the intersection with N. Warren Avenue on the Hilltop when she heard a single gunshot and was struck in the arm, Sgt. Doug Jones of the Felony Assault Unit said.

A 17-year-old has been charged with felonious assault and tampering with evidence in connection with a shooting that sent another 17-year-old to the hospital Friday.

Police say Michael Conyers turned himself in to police after allegedly shooting the other teen during a fight in the 800 block of Gibbard Avenue on the Northeast Side.

Daryl Scott, 43, was shot in the leg when he stepped out onto his porch as someone began shooting from a vehicle at the home in the 5300 block of Hedgewood Road at about 7:00 a.m. The white Hyundai SUV continued on Hedgewood Road and crashed. The suspects fled the scene.

The victim was treated at a hospital and released.

Several other homes on the street were hit by gunfire, said Det. Timothy Mounts of the Homicide Unit.
