Highlighting Ohio’s presidents and their wives

COLUMBUS – Ohio’s 16 presidents and First Ladies are being celebrated during events ahead of the federal President’s Day holiday, which is Monday.

A Facebook live virtual tour highlighting interesting facts, myths and mysteries about the state’s eight U.S. presidents, scheduled for noon Friday, is hosted by the Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center.

Ohio is nicknamed “Mother of Presidents” for the high number of White House occupants it’s been home to. Ulysses Grant, Rutherford Hayes, James Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft and Warren Harding were all Ohio-born. William Henry Harrison lived in Ohio at the time of his election.

The Ohio History Connection will shine the spotlight on Ohio’s eight First Ladies during an online event on Monday.

Presidential historian Jeri Diehl-Cusack will discuss Anna Symmes Harrison, Julia Dent Grant, Lucy Webb Hayes, Lucretia Rudolph Garfield, Caroline Scott Harrison, Ida Saxton McKinley, Helen Herron Taft and Florence Kling DeWolfe Harding.

The James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor will host various online events, including a recorded presentation of a Park Ranger program at 11:00 a.m.: Lincoln and Garfield: Similarities and Differences. That program will be posted to the site’s YouTube channel and will be shared Facebook and Twitter.

The site’s staff will conduct a  live-tweet presidential trivia game (@GarfieldNPS) from 11:00 a.m. until noon and the site’s Facebook page will post new presidential history information every two hours from 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
