Holder in Ohio, trying to calm stormy waters

CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) – U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will be at a forum in Cleveland to talk about building trust between law enforcement and minority communities.

He’s hosting the second in a series of regional meetings on Thursday aimed at easing tensions between police and residents. This one comes a day after New York police say more than 60 people were arrested during protests against a Staten Island grand jury’s decision not to charge a police officer seen on video placing a man in a chokehold as he died.

President Barack Obama put Holder in charge of the initiative after clashes between protesters and police in Ferguson, Missouri.

The Justice Department has been investigating Cleveland’s police department’s pursuit and use of force policies since a 2012 police chase ended with the killing two unarmed people. Six officers were indicted in the shooting.

Protesters in Cleveland blocked a freeway last week after an officer shot and killed a 12-year-old boy holding a pellet gun. Police later said the officer thought the gun was real.
