Honoring the coach

COLUMBUS – Ohio State officials are calling it a “celebration of life,” an event to honor former football coach Earle Bruce, who died Friday at the age of 87.

The hour-long public event is scheduled for 10:30 Wednesday morning at St. John Arena and will feature speakers and music by students from the Ohio State University Marching and Athletic Bands.

Parking is free in the North St. John Arena lots and the North Riverbank lot.

Services and burial will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church for family, close friends, former players and coaches.

Longtime WBNS 10-TV sports anchor Dom Tiberi will emcee the celebration, which will include appearances by present coach Urban Meyer and former coach Jim Tressel; Bruce’s grandson, Zach Smith, and current assistant coach Tony Alford, who played for Bruce at Colorado State and others.

Ohio State All-American William White, who played for Bruce, will deliver the invocation.
