Hunter’s unsolved 1992 murder

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Authorities are asking for information about the 1992 shooting death of a hunter in southern Ohio as part of Attorney General Mike DeWine’s Unsolved Homicides Initiative.

Ronald Pohl, 57, of Dayton was hunting with his son for turkey in the woods off of Price-Strong Road in Salem Township in Meigs County on May 9, 1992, when he was killed, according to a release from DeWine’s office.

Investigators say Pohl’s son was hunting some distance away on the opposite side of the property between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. when he heard a gunshot in the distance, followed by three to four more shots approximately fifteen minutes later. When Pohl failed to leave the woods at noon as planned and his son was unable to find him, he called for help.

“This is one of those cases that has haunted me through the years, but I still have hope that we will find out what happened. Mr. Pohl’s family deserves answers,” says Meigs County Sheriff Keith Wood.

Wood was an Ohio Division of Wildlife Officer in Meigs County at the time of the shooting and was a member of the search party that located Pohl and discovered that he had been shot with buckshot in the back at close range.

“My dad has six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who never had the opportunity to know him,” said Matthew Pohl.

Anyone with information on the death of Ronald Pohl should contact the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office at 740-992-3371 or online or the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) at 855-BCI-OHIO or at the Attorney General’s website.
