COLUMBUS, Ohio – By staying idle while other ranked teams were playing, the Buckeyes moved up two spots in both major college football polls.
Ohio State (4-1, 1-0) is No. 13 in the AP Top 25 and the USA Today coaches, even though they enjoyed their second by week of the season, prior to Saturday’s game home against Big Ten opponent Rutgers (3:30 p.m./ABC).
Despite the fact they have not been beaten, Florida State’s Seminoles have been replaced at the top of the polls by Mississippi State. The formerly No. 1 Seminoles were 38-20 winners over Syracuse in a road game Saturday, while then No. 3 Mississippi State knocked off then No. 2 Auburn, 38-23.
In both polls, Mississippi State is first with FSU second, Mississippi third, Baylor fourth and Notre Dame fifth. In the 78-year history of the AP poll no team has gone from unranked to No. 1 in just five weeks.
