COLUMBUS – It has been a long road back for Columbus police officer Michael Shannon, who joined the division 14 years ago, but has spent half of that time recovering from a gunshot wound.
Tuesday afternoon, he will return to full duty after having been on restricted duty since being shot on duty in 2010, division officials said.
Shannon nearly lost his leg in on March 13, 2010, when he was working special duty at an apartment complex on Dempster Drive and was shot by Gregory Martinez.
Martinez, then 21, is serving a 17-year prison sentence.
After nearly seven years and more than a dozen surgeries, Shannon returns to patrol duty Tuesday in the 19th precinct on the West Side.
A surprise reception was planned for him at the precinct’s Sullivant Avenue substation. Family members and friend were expected to be there, along with current and former 19th precinct officers.
