It’s unanimous: Buckeyes #1

COLUMBUS – In the 65 years that the Associated Press has been publishing a preseason Top 25 in college football, no team has ever been a unanimous choice for No. 1. Until now.

Ohio State received all 61 first-place votes from the media panel in the rankings released Sunday.

The defending national champion Buckeyes were also the No. 1 team in the college football coaches’ poll.

TCU is No. 2 in the AP poll, followed by Alabama, Baylor and Michigan State.

The Buckeyes won the first College Football Playoff championship last season and are trying to become the 12th team to win consecutive AP titles since the poll began in 1936.

Since the AP’s preseason rankings debuted in 1950 no team had received more than 97 percent of the first-place votes in a preseason poll.

In 2013, Alabama, which had won two straight championships, received 58 of 60 first-place votes and defending champion Florida did the same in 2009. Neither finished the season No. 1.

Ohio State has made 839 appearances in the Top 25 poll, more than any other school, and has been ranked No. 1 for the 96th time.

Only two schools, Oklahoma (101) and Notre Dame (98) have been the AP’s No. 1 team more weeks than Ohio State.
