Judge calls order closing gyms ‘oppressive’

COLUMBUS — A judge is northeast Ohio has slammed the state health director’s order shutting down gyms during the pandemic as an arbitrary and oppressive decision.

Eugene Lucci, a judge in Lake County, ruled Wednesday in a case brought by local gyms challenging Dr. Amy Acton’s March 22 order shutting down gyms and fitness centers as nonessential businesses.

Gym owners argued Acton exceeded her authority.

Lucci ruled that gyms provide important physical and mental health benefits.

The judge’s ruling only affects Lake County, and gyms are scheduled to open May 26.
