COLUMBUS — The judge in the murder trial of former Mount Carmel physician Dr. William Husel has told jurors to make one more attempt to come up with a verdict in the case.
Panel members informed Franklin County Judge Michael Holbrook on Monday they had reached an impasse in their deliberations.
Husel is accused of ordering excessive painkillers that led to the deaths of patients in the Mount Carmel Health System.
Prosecutors contend that the amount of painkillers Husel ordered for nonsurgical situations indicated an intent to end lives.
Husel’s attorneys say that he was providing comfort care for dying patients.
Jurors heard from 53 prosecution witnesses during the trial that began in February.
Husel’s defense team called a single witness.
