Juvenile escapee’s bid for freedom

COLUMBUS – A teenager who escaped from a jail in Marion County Monday was recaptured in Delaware County after several hours on the run.

Michael Wilson, 16, was caught near the Delaware County Fairgrounds after he scaled a fence and escaped from the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center Monday evening, Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey said.

Wilson was serving time for robbery and assault.

Police converged on Delaware shortly after 6:00 a.m. Tuesday when two off-duty State Highway Patrol troopers spotted Wilson along U.S. 23 and he was taken into at 10:30 a.m., Bailey said.

Several school districts, including the Delaware City Schools, went into lockdown or delayed the start of classes while Wilson was at large.

Along with the Delaware and Marion County Sheriff’s offices, the Highway Patrol, Delaware and Marion City Police, the Delaware Tactical Unit, Juvenile Court Probation officers, the Ohio Wesleyan University Department of Public Safety and a dozen K-9 units took part in the search.
