COLUMBUS – An eight-year-old boy is in “extremely critical condition” and a two-year-old girl was in stable condition Wednesday police say it looks like the children were caught in between combatants in a shootout on the East Side.

A caller told police dispatchers that two children had been shot in the 400 block of Mayfair Boulevard at 4:21 p.m., according to Sgt. Stanley Latta of the Homicide Unit.
When officers arrived they the boy, who was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
The girl was also taken to Children’s Hospital and her condition was upgraded to stable, Latta said.
Latta says the children, whose names were not released, were not the intended targets but may have been caught in a crossfire between unknown combatants.
The case remains under investigation.
