COLUMBUS – A slight decline in the volume of highway traffic over the Thanksgiving holiday translated into a slightly lower death toll on Ohio’s roadways.

The State Highway Patrol says 16 people were killed during the holiday reporting period from midnight Wednesday until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, compared to 17 people killed during the holiday weekend last year.

There were 15 fatal crashes during the period, compared with 14 fatal crashes in 2021.

Of the 16 victims, two were pedestrians, 10 were not wearing a seat belt and six crashes involved impaired driving, patrol officials announced Monday.

Troopers arrested 270 people for operating a vehicle while impaired and 130 for drugs while issuing 686 citations for safety belt violations and 100 for distracted driving.
