Lingmerth earned every bit of that handshake with tournament host Jack Nicklaus.

He holed a 10-foot putt to match pars with Rose on the 18th on the first extra hole. He got up-and-down from a bunker on the 18th to extend the playoff. And he finally won at No. 10 with a putt just inside 5 feet for another par.

Lingmerth closed with a 3-under 69.

Rose overcame what looked like a shank from the bunker on the 18th in regulation for par and a 72 to force the playoff. He also made a 20-foot putt for par on the first playoff hole.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, the Captains Club at Muirfield Village announced that Hall of Fame golfer Johnny Miller, a two-time major champion and critically acclaimed analyst, will be the 2016 Memorial Tournament Honoree.

Also to be honored posthumously in 2016 are past major champions Horton Smith and Leo Diegel.

Tiger Woods says the career-high 85 he posted in the third round of the Memorial is a day he has to expect while going through a swing change.

Woods bounced back with a 74 on Sunday. His golf was much better until the end, when he made a pair of double bogeys over the last two holes. He played as a single for the first time in his career and finished in just under three hours.

Woods says it didn’t matter that he was in last place. He was trying to get better.

He had a blister on the outside of his left forefinger and says he will probably just putt for the next few days to let it heal before getting ready for the U.S. Open.
