Losses by Sooners, Wolverines help Buckeyes in polls

COLUMBUS – The Buckeyes moved up in both major college football polls, thanks again to losses by higher-ranked teams to unranked opponents on their home fields.

After a 62-14 destruction of Maryland Saturday at Ohio Stadium, Ohio State (5-1, 3-0, Big Ten) moved up to No. 8 in the coaches’ poll and No. 9 in the Associated Press Top 25 media poll.

Ohio State travels to Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb., for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Cornhuskers that will be televised by FOX.

Six ranked teams lost this past weekend, including Oklahoma and Michigan.

Alabama and Clemson remain 1-2, but there are changes underneath after former No. 3 Oklahoma lost at home to Iowa State and Michigan fell to Michigan State on Saturday.

Penn State moved up to No. 3 in both polls and Georgia and Washington round out the top five. TCU, Wisconsin, Washington State, Ohio State and Auburn make up the rest of the top 10 in the media poll while Miami has cracked the top 10 in the coaches’ survey.

Michigan State entered the polls at No. 21/22 after beating a Michigan team that has been ranked no worse than 11th all season. The Wolverines are still ranked ahead of the Spartans at No. 17/16.
