Man approaches children at Newark school

NEWARK – Newark police are looking for a man who approached several children at an elementary school Monday, trying to entice them into his vehicle.

UPDATE 4/27/19 8:40 a.m.: Newark police say detectives located the driver of the can and interviewed him and determined there had never been a threat to any children or adults at the school.

The principal of Ben Franklin Elementary School told police the man, driving a white Chrysler Town & Country minivan (pictured above) drove up to students in the playground of the school on Beacon Road at about 2:20 p.m., asking children if they wanted to get into the van and go for a drive, Sgt. Doug Wells said.

When the students refuse, he drove away.

The driver is described as a white male in his 50’s with grey hair and beard. Wells says the children described him as being heavy-set and wearing a white T-shirt.

Anyone with information regarding the male subject or the van is asked to call the Newark Division of Police.
