Man arrested in South Linden homicide

COLUMBUS – A Northeast Side man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a man who police say drove away from the scene of the shooting and crashed his vehicle.

Adrian Tucker was charged with murder after allegedly shooting William Berry II to death in an alley in the 1300 block of E. 26th Avenue in South Linden early Wednesday morning, Sgt. Jeffrey Strayer of the Homicide Unit said.

Witnesses told police accounts that Berry, 38, had exited his vehicle in the alley at approximately 2:20 a.m. when, for reasons still unknown, Tucker, 24, came out of the rear door of his home and fired multiple shots toward Berry, Strayer said.

Berry got back into his vehicle and fled westbound in the alley, perhaps unaware he had been mortally wounded, and crashed near the intersection of 26th Avenue and Medina Avenue where officers found him inside the vehicle.

Columbus fire personnel took Berry III to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:51 a.m., Strayer said.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

This is the 96th homicide of the year in Columbus.
