Man dead in SW Side shooting

COLUMBUS – Columbus police were going door-to-door early Friday morning, looking for clues to who might have gunned down a 22-year-old man inside a Southwest Side apartment building overnight.

Cody Virgil Nichols was shot to death inside an apartment building on Doulton Court sometime before 2:00 a.m., Homicide Unit Sgt. Jeff Strayer said.

Police officers were called to the address at 1:52 a.m. on a report of shots fired and, approximately 10 minutes later, received a second call that a man was lying in the hallway near the front of the building, Strayer said.

Officers located Nichols, who was suffering from a gunshot wound, and was pronounced dead at the scene, Strayer said.

Detectives are canvassing the area attempting to identify any possible witnesses to the shooting.

This is the 78th homicide of the year in Columbus.
