Man dies 2 weeks after being assaulted

COLUMBUS – A 56-year-old man died Monday, nearly two weeks after he was beaten following a brawl on a Hilltop street.

Officers responding to a report of several people fighting in the 500 block of S. Eureka Avenue at approximately 11:21 p.m. on March 2 found several injured people at the scene, including Keith Allen Monroe, who was transported to Grant Medical Center in stable condition while most of the victims were treated for minor injuries, said Sgt. Jeffrey Strayer of the Homicide Unit.

Monroe’s condition deteriorates and he was diagnosed with a severe head injury requiring surgery, Strayer said.

He was pronounced dead Monday afternoon.

Strayer says initial witness accounts suggest that Monroe was not involved in the initial altercation and was targeted afterwards by some of the people involved in the brawl.

The investigation continues, he said.

This is the 22nd homicide in Columbus this year.

Anyone with information regarding the incident, is asked to call the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS.
