Man dies a week after fight at bus stop

COLUMBUS – No charges have been filed yet in the death of a man who died a week after being critically injured in a fight at an East Side bus stop.

UPDATE 8/6/18 7:00 a.m.: The investigation has determined that Nicholson was assaulted by Richard Spirnak, 45, who has been arrested on one felony count of assault. The investigation into Brandon Nicholson’s death is progressing.

Brandon Nicholson died Monday night at Grant Medical Center, a week after he was taken to the hospital in critical condition with head injuries he suffered during a fight at a COTA bus stop James Road and East Main Street on July 23, Homicide Unit third shift supervisor Sgt. Jeff Strayer said.

Detectives determined that Nicholson, 41, was involved in an argument with someone, which escalated into a physical altercation culminating in the injury that led to Nicholson’s death, Strayer said.

How and why the argument started is still under investigation and, although detectives have identified the other person involved, Strayer says no charges have currently been filed and the person’s is being withheld at this time.

This is the 61st homicide in Columbus in 2018.
