COLUMBUS – Despite the efforts of a Columbus police officer to save his life, a man shot while sitting inside a car on the Hilltop early Sunday eventually died of his injuries, the 35th homicide victim of 2019 in Columbus.
Chad Wallace and another person were inside a vehicle in an alley near Whitethorne Avenue, between Springmont and Safford Avenues, at approximately 12:30 a.m. when Wallace was shot by a suspect who ran away up the alley toward Springmont Avenue, Sgt. Jeffrey Strayer of the Homicide Unit said.
Wallace, 43, was able to get out of the vehicle and exchange words with the suspect and ended up being taken to Grant Medical Center where he died at 9:04 p.m., Strayer said.
Officer Pete Jacobs administered first aid in an unsuccessful effort to save Wallace’s life, according to a post on the Division of Police Twitter feed.
