Man drowns in NE Side apartment complex pond

COLUMBUS – A man drowned while reportedly swimming in a pond at a Northeast Side apartment complex late Sunday night, Columbus police said.

UPDATE: Police have identified the victim as Thang Khan Kim, 30, a native Yangon in Myanmar. They say he had been in the U.S. since April.

Officers found the body of the 30-year-old man already underwater when they arrived at the Whispering Oaks Apartment Complex on Belcher Drive shortly after 11:15 p.m., Homicide Unit Det. Jeff Brandt said.

The man, whose name had not been released by police early Monday, had been under the water in the pond just west of the building at 1921 Belcher Drive for approximately 30 minutes when rescuers arrived, according to a report on WBNS 10-TV.

Dive teams quickly began searching the water, and found the man 20 feet from shore around 45 minutes later, according to the television station.

The man was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital by Clinton Township medics and was pronounced dead just before 12:30 a.m., Brandt said

Investigators were working to find out why he got in the water late at night.
