Two officers responding to the club in the 900 block of E. 5th Avenue at 5:25 a.m. on a report that a man with a gun was threatening patrons and encountered Balon Chaka Cloud, who was armed man and failed to drop his gun after repeated commands, police division public information officer Sgt. Chantay Boxill said.
Officers Devan Vandusen and Zachary Townsley opened fire, injuring Cloud, 31, who was transported to Grant Hospital where he was taken into surgery and is in critical but stable condition, Boxill said.
No officers were injured.
Further investigation indicated that Cloud was not the suspect described in the 911 call, Boxill said.
Cloud was charged with possessing a weapon illegally.
Several guns were recovered at the scene.
The Columbus Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the incident.
Vandusen and Townsley have each been with the Division of Police for one year.
