COLUMBUS – Police say a man who crashed while driving away from the scene of the crime was charged with the fatal shooting of another man during an argument in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood early Saturday.

Columbus police officers responding to several 911 calls reporting a shooting in the 1000 block of N. 9th Street just after 4:30 a.m. found 21-year-old James Shearer suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit.

Shearer was pronounced dead at the scene.

As officers were arriving, a vehicle fled the scene and crashed into some parked cars and a fire hydrant, Marable said. Both occupants fled from the vehicle on foot and were captured by officers.

The driver of the vehicle, 22-year-old Nicholas Kesterson, was involved in an argument with Shearer when Kesterson produced a handgun and shot Shearer, fatally wounding him.

Detectives have charged Kesterson with one count of murder, Marable said.
