Man shot by police, hospital security in St. Ann’s ER

COLUMBUS – Authorities say a man died after being shot by police and hospital security officers during an altercation at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital Monday afternoon.

UPDATE 4/14/21 6:48 a.m.: The victim in this shooting has been positively identified as Miles Jackson, 27, Columbus police said.

Westerville officers responded to a report of a man passed out in a car Monday morning and then followed paramedics as they transported the man to the hospital, according to a joint statement issued by Columbus and Westerville police and the hospital.

The man was found to have active felony warrants in Columbus and authorities say “an altercation ensued which resulted in the discharge of firearms” from the Columbus Division of Police and St. Ann’s security officers after Westerville police initiated a transfer of custody at approximately 2:15 p.m..

“During the transfer of custody, an altercation ensued which resulted in the discharge of firearms from CPD and St. Ann’s security officers. Emergency room staff immediately attempted resuscitation. The suspect was pronounced at the scene,” the statement read.

At the request of the Westerville Division of Police, the Ohio Attorney General Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.

An additional firearm was recovered at the scene, authorities said.

No injuries were reported to members of the public, hospital staff, physicians or officers.
