Man shot, dies on street near Expo Center

COLUMBUS – A 19-year-old man died after being shot by someone he was riding with in a vehicle and collapsing on a street near a Northeast Side interstate Sunday night.

Columbus homicide detectives say the victim, whose name was not released early Monday, was in a vehicle with several others when someone in the vehicle produced a handgun, several shots were fired, and a struggle ensued, according to Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit.

During the struggle the handgun discharged again, fatally wounding the man, who got out of the vehicle on 11th Avenue near I-71 where he collapsed.

The vehicle fled the scene.

The victim was subsequently aided by a passerby who called for help just after 5:55 p.m.

The man was transported to OSU Wexner Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 7:40 p.m., Marable said.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

This was the 33rd homicide of the year in Columbus.

A couple and their 1-year-old daughter were unhurt when a bullet smashed through the windshield of their vehicle while they were driving westbound on I-670 near Neil Avenue at 10:15 p.m. Saturday night, police said. They told police someone fired four or five rounds after a silver Dodge Charger passed them at a high rate of speed.
