Man shot helping his daughter as she was being robbed

COLUMBUS – Columbus police say a man is expected to recover from a gunshot wound after coming to his daughter’s aid while she was being robbed outside their West Side home late Sunday.

Witnesses told investigators that a teenage girl known as “Maddison” had contacted Dustin Thacker’s 16-year-old daughter, telling her that she was out in front of Thacker’s home on Baytree Drive just before midnight and asked the girl to come out, Sgt. David Shimberg of the Felony Assault Unit said.

When Thacker’s daughter went out and sat in Maddison’s car, an unknown white male yanked open the car door and demanded the girl give him her cell phone at gunpoint.

Thacker, 35, witnessed the robbery from the front porch of his home when he ran down to help his daughter, the suspect shot at him several times, striking him in the leg before driving away in an unknown car, Shimberg said.

Thacker was taken to a hospital Shimberg says he is expected to survive his injuries. His daughter was not injured.
