COLUMBUS – The number of homicides in Columbus this year reached 45 Monday with the deaths of two people Monday.
Officers found Kaykamia Ruffin, 27, unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound when they responded to a reported shooting in the area of Maryland Avenue and Chancery Way on the East Side at approximately 7:32 p.m., Sgt. David Shimberg of the Homicide Unit said.
She died later at an area hospital.
At approximately 11:22 a.m., the family of Erick Peeples reported to Columbus police they were unable to reach Peeples, 22, so they went to his home in the 1700 block of Kent Street on the Southeast Side to check on his wellbeing and found him dead, Homicide Unit investigators said.
Police say they are investigating the death as a homicide.
