COLUMBUS – Construction-weary motorists on the West Side may have that lets-get-it-over-with feeling as the Ohio Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it is moving up a major repaving project on I-270 between Trabue Road and US 33 by more than a year to next spring.
The $66.5 million project to widen eight miles of I-270 from three lanes to four is expected to be complete in the fall of 2018.
The addition of a fourth lane in each direction will increase capacity on this stretch of I-270 between Hilliard and Dublin, where traffic is expected to increase by 30,000 vehicles per day over the next 20 years, according to a release from the headquarters of ODOT’s District 6 in Delaware.
Construction was originally set to begin in July 2018, but funding is available now, so the project is happening sooner rather than later, officials said.
The 270/33 interchange reconstruction project in Dublin will still be under construction in 2017 but ODOT officials say all lanes, ramps and bridges are expected to be open by the end of this year. The work scheduled for 2017 at the Dublin interchange will be landscaping, final paving and striping.
The interstate will be widened within its existing median, which transportation department officials say will result in less impact to traffic during construction.
