COLUMBUS – Police say a 75-year-old Meals on Wheels volunteer shot one of two teenagers who were trying to rob him while he was delivering a meal on the Northeast Side Friday morning.
Police say the man had delivered a meal to a client in the 1200 E. 18th Avenue at 11:10 a.m. when the two teens approached him and a 14-year-old ordered him out of his car while the second suspect, who appeared to be about 15 years old, got into the vehicle, according to a tweet on the Columbus Division of Police Twitter feed.
The older suspect stole the victim’s cell phone and wallet but the victim, who police say had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, pulled a gun. The younger suspect also produced a gun and the victim shot them, police said.
The 14-year-old was arrested and charged with motor vehicle theft, robbery and kidnapping while the older suspect ran away.
The victim will not be charged, police said.
