Melons hide 3,300 lbs. of pot

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus police officers arrested three men and seized more than a ton and a half of marijuana hidden on a truck carrying watermelons.

Officers were originally called to a trucking facility near Bolton Field on the Far West Side early on the morning of April 14 on a call involving a theft connected to a semi-trailer, police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said

When they arrived at 1929 Lone Eagle Street around 3:18 a.m. they found Anthony Byrd, 34 (above left); Ronald Hayward, 39 (center); and Cameron Jackson, 36 (right), who appeared to be unloading watermelons from the trailer.

While questioning the men, Weiner says the officers found about 3,300 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of nearly $6 million.

The men were charged with one felony count each of marijuana possession, Weiner said.
