Meyer: Next game up

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Urban Meyer enjoyed his biggest win at No. 8 Ohio State and has already moved onto the next game.

“We enjoy the win, learn from the win, and [the players will] get the mission,” he told reporters Monday.

The mission is to go to frigid Minnesota to face the Golden Gophers on Saturday (Noon/ABC).

Meyer announced that the team will be without H-back Dontre Wilson for a while because of a broken foot.

“He actually caught a touchdown pass with a broken foot. Tells you what a tough guy [he is],” Meyer said. “He’s out for a few weeks.”

Wilson had amassed 300 receiving yards and 1,064 all-purpose yards this season.

Meyer also deflected more than one question about what some fans and reporters see as a looming quarterback controversy. He is not wasting energy on whether redshirt freshman J.T Barrett will hold onto the job next year when the star he replaced, two-time Big Ten MVP Braxton Miller, returns from shoulder surgery.

“Competition brings out the best. And I’m really excited to have two really good quarterbacks next year, if that’s the plan,” he said.

Barrett continued to pile up impressive numbers in the Buckeyes’ 49-37 win at Michigan State on Saturday night and is only three touchdowns shy of breaking Miller’s single-season record, set only a year ago when Miller won his second consecutive MVP award.

“J.T. Barrett is a product of those around him. I also say that when things aren’t going as well…you put good guys around a good quarterback, teach them well, good chance good things are going to happen,” Meyer said.

With another test on Saturday, Meyer is happy where his team is and — for the most part — how it’s playing.
