Minimum wage to $8.10 in 2015

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio’s minimum wage workers are getting a raise at the beginning of the New Year.

The base hourly wage is scheduled to increase to $8.10 an hour for non-tipped employees and to $4.05 per hour for tipped employees on Jan. 1, according to the state Department of Commerce. The increase minimum applies to employees of businesses with annual gross receipts of more than $297,000 per year.

The current Ohio minimum wage is $7.95 for non-tipped employees and $3.98 for tipped employees.

Meanwhile, U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas Perez has finalized a federal rule raising the minimum wage for employees of federal contractors to $10.10 an hour. Wednesday’s move puts in force a step that President Barack Obama announced last February.

A constitutional amendment passed by Ohio voters in 2006 calls for the state’s minimum wage increase on Jan. 1 of each year be tied to the Consumer Price Index which rose 1.6 percent from Sept. 1, 2013 to August 31, 2014.
