Missing macaw

POWELL (AP) – Columbus Zoo and Aquarium officials are seeking the public’s assistance in finding a blue and gold macaw that took off and escaped zoo property.

The bird, similar to those pictured above, flew the coop around 3:45 p.m. Thursday while it was being trained for a show in an open-air amphitheater at the Powell zoo, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Spokeswoman Patty Peters says the macaw was one of the birds featured in the zoo’s daily Animals on Safari show.

Zoo employees conducted a search of the grounds but failed to find the bird.

Peters says she couldn’t think of a bird that has left zoo grounds in recent memory and that most escaped birds are usually found in nearby trees.

She says parrots can live outside during summer months but cannot survive central Ohio winters.
