The 17-year-old girl was walking to school on the sidewalk in the 200 block of Ashburton Road at 7:55 a.m. Monday when her mother drove up onto the sidewalk and ran over her with her car, breaking her left leg in two places, said Sgt. John Hurst of the Columbus police Special Victims Bureau Physical Abuse Unit.

Ebony Woody, 34, has been charged with felonious assault, child endangering and vehicular assault, Hurst said.

Woody was following her daughter and drove over the curb onto the sidewalk and chased the girl as she tried to run away, Hurst said.

Woody knocked her daughter down with the vehicle and ran over her left leg. Hurst says she stopped and backed up, running over the victim’s leg a second time.

Woody then took her daughter to a friend’s home where she dropped her off and left the scene without reporting the incident, Hurst said.

The girl was listed in stable condition at Grant Medical Center with two fractures to her left leg, Hurst said.

Woody turned herself in at police headquarters, Hurst said.

UPDATE Sept. 20, 9:18 a.m.: Woody was arraigned Tuesday. Police say she had ordered the girl not to go to school on Monday as punishment and chased her down when she left. They say she dropped the girl off at her father’s house after hitting her, and the teen called 911.
