More mosquito spraying for Dublin this week

COLUMBUS – Two more mosquito traps that tested positive for West Nile virus will mean two more nights of spraying for two sections of Dublin.

Franklin County Public Health last week confirmed positive West Nile Virus in the central and western portions of the city and will spray those areas on Wednesday and Thursday nights, beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The area scheduled for spraying Wednesday (above left) lies between Brand and Post Roads and extends from the city’s western border to the Scioto River. The section scheduled for spraying the following night (right) is located north of Brand Road and extends from Hyland Croy Road to the river.

Although the mosquito numbers across Dublin were lower than in previous weeks, this has been the worst summer for mosquitoes in Ohio in many years, thanks to a long rainy period, which contributed to flooding, according to Lindsay Weisenauer, the city’s senior public information officer. The floodwater mosquitoes are large and are “aggressive biters,” she said.

Weisenauer says residents should take precautionary steps to avoid mosquito bites: Wear insect repellant containing DEET, limit outdoor activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed.
