Mosquito spraying in Columbus, Delaware Co.

COLUMBUS – After Ohio recorded its first human death of 2015 from the West Nile virus, health officials continue to battle the mosquitoes that carry the disease.

Residents are urged to eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Make sure property is free of stagnant water in flower pots, bird baths, tarps, gutters and other places where water can collect.

Avoid going outdoors early in the evening when mosquitoes are most active and, if you do go out, wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing and apply mosquito repellant that contains DEET or Picaridin.

Columbus Public Health crews will be spraying between 4:00 and 6:00 a.m. in the following areas:

Two mosquito traps in Delaware County tested positive for the virus, so Delaware General Health District trucks will be fogging in two areas this week:

Thursday: Berlin Twp., south of Sherman Rd., north of Plumb Rd., east of Africa Rd. and west of 3 B’s & K Rd.

Monday, Aug. 31: Orange Twp., south of Parklawn, north of Powell Rd., east of US 23 and west of Walker Woods Blvd.

Fogging begins at 9:00 p.m. and resident are encouraged to keep pets and small children indoors.

Anyone who does not want their property sprayed is asked to call the Health District at 740-368-1700 and request to be placed on the no-fog list.
