Mother of three slain in Newark

NEWARK – Police in Newark say a man is in jail after confessing to the murder of his girlfriend, a young mother of three small children.

Newark Police were called to a home on W. Church Street to check on the well-being of Kayla Kemmerling by family members who received a message from Kayla’s boyfriend and located the 24-year-old woman’s body, Division of Police spokesman Sgt. Clint Eskins said.

Officers also located three children under the age of 5, removed them from the residence and placed them in the custody of Licking County Children Services, Eskins said.

Detectives were able to quickly establish Kemmerling’s boyfriend, 24-year-old Christian Young as a suspect. He was arrested in Hocking County and confessed to the slaying, Eskins said.

The Licking County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case for charges that may include aggravated murder, Eskins said.
