Man faces federal charges in deaths of 2 postal workers

COLUMBUS — A disgruntled postal worker accused of fatally shooting his supervisor at the Dublin post office and later killing the postmaster has been indicted on federal charges carrying the possibility of a death sentence.

The indictment announced Thursday by county and federal prosecutors charges DeShaune Stewart, of Columbus, with two counts of murdering an officer of the United States.

Authorities say Stewart, 24, shot and killed 52-year-old Lance Herrera-Dempsey at the post office located at 6400 Emerald Parkway early on the morning of Dec. 23.

Dempsey was a Customer Services Supervisor with direct supervision duties over Stewart, federal officials said.

They say he had killed Dublin postmaster Ginger Ballard, 53, at an apartment complex on Bowland Place North in Dublin where officers found him, about three hours later, completely nude and in possession of a handgun, authorities said.

Authorities say Stewart was naked during both attacks.

Police say the violence appeared to be retaliation for Stewart’s pending dismissal at work.

A message seeking comment was left with Stewart’s public defender.
