COLUMBUS – A fight inside a Northeast Side bar turned deadly Sunday night when a man was shot on the sidewalk outside the Grand Champion North Bar, the second fatal shooting at the location in as many years.
UPDATE: Murder charges were filed against Santos Carrillo, 52, who is still at large and whose whereabouts are unknown, police said.
At approximately 10:33 p.m., Columbus police officers called to the bar at 2477 E. Dublin-Granville Road found an injured male lying on the sidewalk, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, Sgt. Jeffrey Strayer of the Homicide Unit said. The man, who had not positively identified early Monday, was pronounced at 10:42 p.m. by Columbus paramedics.
The initial investigation revealed that the victim and the suspect were involved in a fight that started inside the bar and moved outside where it quickly escalated, culminating in the deadly shooting, Strayer said.
The suspect, who also had not been identified, fled the scene in an unknown direction, Strayer said.
The investigation continues.
This is the 83rd homicide in Columbus this year.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS.
Kailan Ellison, 24, was charged with murder in the shooting death of Martise Maddox-Suddith, 24, who was found in a parking area just east of the Grand Champion North Bar in November 2017. Detectives also said they were seeking a second person of interest in the shooting.
Maddox-Suddith was the 118th homicide victim of 2017, which saw a record number of murders in Columbus.
