New jobs welcome amid signs of slowing growth

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nearly 400 new jobs could be coming to central Ohio on the back of state tax breaks.

State officials approved tax credits yesterday for four projects, including a Seattle-based food company that will create 250 jobs at a new factory.

The projects were among 11 approved by the Tax Credit Authority which Gov. John Kasich’s office says will create 733 jobs statewide as a liberal policy group says the state’s job growth has slowed during the last year.

Policy Matters Ohio says, since the end of the 2009 recession, Ohio’s slow 3 percent growth rate plummeted to 0.5 percent over the last 12 months. Data released by the state showed Ohio added only 2,600 jobs in September and October.

Among the projects approved for tax breaks by the state Tax Credit Authority:

SK Food Group, a Seattle-based company specializing in food products which says it will build a new $13 million facility at a location to be determined later, creating about 250 jobs over the next three years.

Moriroku Technology North America, an automotive parts manufacturer, will build a new R&D and sales facility, adding 50 new jobs to the company’s current workforce of 32.

HMB, Inc., an information technology company, is expanding in Westerville adding 75 employees to its current roster of 145 over the next three years, and investing $550,000 in training, software and equipment.

Famous Enterprises, Inc., a wholesaler of HVAC, plumbing, industrial and building products, expects to create 20 full-time jobs as a result of the company’s new location in Columbus.

Collectively, the governor’s office says, the projects are expected to result in more than $35 million in new payroll, and spur more than $152 million in investment across the state.
