New pool means more lifeguard jobs in UA

COLUMBUS – Upper Arlington officials are looking forward to having three swimming pools in operation this summer but they’re also working very hard to make sure all three will be in business all summer.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department plans to hire approximately 115 lifeguards this summer to staff the new Tremont Pool at Northam Park, the Reed Road Water Park and the Devon Pool.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in October for the $4.2 million Tremont Pool (right), which the contractor has promised will be open in time for the start of the season Memorial Day weekend, according to an update on the city’s website.

Last summer, officials with were forced to close the Reed Road facility due to a lack of staff when school-age workers returned to school. They do not want to have a repeat of that so they are hiring seasonal staff now and hoping to attract more non-student adults to serve as camp counselors, lifeguards and staff in the city’s parks and tennis courts.

An estimated 91,000 people visited the two pools that were open in 2016.

The additional hiring will bring the department’s staff to 125 lifeguards and managers and approximately 15 swimming pool office workers.

City officials say they have added some new incentive programs for the pool workers and increased pay rates for 2017.

The Tremont Pool will boast heated water, six lap lanes, two diving boards and a climbing wall. It will have a zero-depth entry area, a separate toddler area and the depth increases to 12 feet.
