Newsies get jump on school year

COLUMBUS – As it has done for the past 109 years, Charity Newsies will begin handing out new pants, shirts, coats and school uniform essentials in plenty of time for the start of the next school year.

The organization that has provided children with new school clothes since 1907 is filling its warehouse with donated clothing and taking applications at select Columbus Metropolitan Library branches beginning in July.

Charity Newsies outfits students enrolled in public, parochial, charter and vocational schools throughout Franklin County.

The organization has been taking applications early in the summer since 2015.

“Since most of the schools in central Ohio begin classes in August, we recognized that in order for more students to receive their new school clothes, uniforms and shoes before the first day of classes, we needed to take applications earlier than in previous years,” said president Stephen Chandler.

When applications are taken early in the summer, students can start visiting the Charity Newsies showroom to select new clothes in the first week of August.
